Paddle & Pick

2019-05-13

On Monday 13th May, Y6 went on a “Paddle and Pick” outing on the Paddington canal, in order to increase our awareness of plastic waste and to help clean up the environment. After collecting empty bottles throughout the term, we worked with the charity, The Whale Company, to make two sturdy plastic bottle paddleboards during earlier workshops at Glendower by sticking 2-litre plastic bottles together with silicone.

Once on the water, we worked in pairs to collect litter from the bottom of the canal while balancing carefully in order to not fall in. As we scooped plastic from the bottom, we found some incredible things that we never would have suspected. From this experience we found that the amount of plastic and rubbish in our waterways has reached unprecedented levels and we need to continue to dramatically reduce plastic use and to make active efforts to clean up and recycle the waste that is already in the environment. We had a lot of fun and were all completely exhausted when we arrived back at school!

Thank you to Miss Fattorini, Miss Humble, Miss Pennick and Mr van Rooyen for accompanying us.
