Visits and Workshops
At Glendower we believe that well organised visits related to units of study are a superb means of allowing our pupils to experience extra educational opportunities well beyond what is possible to offer within the confines of the classroom.
In these visits, we aim to extend the actual classroom learning experience to the real world thus putting the classroom experience in a more effective context; this will extend pupil knowledge and experience in a way which is impossible to do in the classroom.
At Glendower, we are in the most fortunate position of being able to walk to several of London's most prestigious museums-for example, the V&A, The Natural History Museum and The Science Museum. Both the Brompton Oratory and Holy Trinity Church Brompton are nearby. These churches are at the heart of the local community and both are beautifully preserved examples of Victorian architecture.
We also have St Augustine's Church on Queen's Gate literally on our doorstep and again a wonderful example of Victorian architecture. All three churches are on the itinerary of many visitors to London and as a school we have such ease of access!
The Ismaili Centre in South Kensington is only a five minute walk from the school and is used regularly to support our RE lessons.
We have easy access to Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Holland Park and we use these parks for many different activities from Sport to Science exploration.
Our pupils attend plays and concerts in central London and we use, for example, venues such as The Polka Theatre in Wimbledon and also many of the other theatres and concert venues in London. As an example we regularly take pupils to The Open Air Theatre in Regents Park and to The Globe Theatre.
It would be quite impossible to list all of our visits and those already mentioned only give a flavour of what we do. The annual magazine, The Glendower Collection, contains photos and text relating to most of these visits. Further afield, our Y5/6 pupils experience a residential visit to France, as well as a week at an activity centre in the UK
All pupils will make visits related to the many different areas of the curriculum and these might include:
a visit to a French patisserie
a visit to watch an international netball match
a visit to a synagogue, a church, a temple
a visit to a working farm
a visit where our pupils experience being a pupil at a Victorian school
a visit to The Barn Elms Wetland Centre and
a visit to the Chelsea Physic garden
a pizza designing trip to Perfect Pizza
Pond dipping and mini beasts at the Look Out Centre in Hyde Park
a tour around The Golden Hinde in Southwark
